Keep in mind that if you want to work with me directly to learn how to “Press Play on your Pay,” visit JenniferTardy.com/salary to take our newest course in the Career Success University.
Let’s get right into these 5 abilities!
Ability #1: In order to get the pay you deserve, you MUST have The Right Mindset
- Knowing you are enough
- Knowing that you deserve to be paid your worth, knowing that you are qualified, etc.
Most people are not paid more because they feel like something is missing within them to ask for more. You feel like you need that one additional area of experience, or that degree, or that (whatever it is) to align before you focus on your pay. It is not the truth. You already have the experience.
As a matter of fact,
**Check out “How Your Experience Affects Your Salary”. This will help along with your research to allow you a better understanding of how all factors play a part in knowing your salary and how it relates to the work you are doing or what you are knowledgeable about.
Ability #2: In order to get the pay you deserve, you must have Market Knowledge
- You must know where you currently stand with you pay.
- Do you market salary research.
- Are you in line with your peers in the market?
Ability #3: In order to get the pay you deserve, you must be willing to have a Courageous Conversation
- You must be willing to voice your desire to a “decision maker” who can do something about getting your pay to where it should be.

Ability #4: In order to get the pay you deserve, you must be willing to Frame your Messaging correctly
- You must be able to present your business case.
- Getting the pay you deserve is a business case. Not an emotional, I think, I feel, I believe conversation.
- Speak with data not feelings.
Have you checked out a previous video?
**Make sure to check out a previous video, “How Companies Determine Your Salary”. Since getting the pay that you deserve is a business case, you should understand how your salary is determined in the first place.
Ability #5: In order to get the pay you deserve, you must be willing to Stand Firm
- What are you willing to do if you do not receive the pay you deserve from this one employer?
- You have to be willing to do what it takes to get the pay you deserve, even if it means declining an offer or looking for new employment.
As Promised, I wanted to share with you a career success tip!
CareerSuccess Bonus Tip for UPs: Have you heard of equal pay day? If you go to equalpaytoday.org, you will see this data there, but I want to share it with you here. Equal Pay Day is the day when women earn the same amount that white, non-Hispanic men earned in 2018. In other words, we earn a fraction of the dollar that they earn to do the same work. Want to know when equal pay day if for you?
- Women (in general) – April 2
- Asian women – March 5
- White women – April 19
- Black women – August 22
- Native American women – September 23
- Latina – November 20
This is why there are so many laws around pay equity. I’m going to talk more about pay equity in a future video, but the gist of today’s bonus tip is to simply be informed so that you can make better decisions about your salary.
I’m glad that you rode out these few minutes with me and stuck it out to the very end! Hope you got what you came for and more!
You must have the right mindset, know the market, have a courageous conversation, make sure to have a framed message, and always stand firm to your desire for better pay.
At the end of the day, you are worth fighting for!
