The two types of jobs are definitely different in nature and you will need to approach a formal job interview more professionally.

Hey Jobseekers, Jennifer Tardy here, your career success coach and welcome to the CareerSuccess Channel for UPs. Today’s video will focus on job interview tips for your first job.
I will share with you four tips on how to be successful in mastering your first job interview. These tips will leave you feeling more confident than ever and prepared to show the interviewer that you come to land the position.

When I use the term first job, I am referring to your “first, formal, full-time, role.” But if you are anything like me, before your First, Formal, Full Time role, there was the: Movie Starz cashier (back when there were VHS tapes), Long-John Silvers cashier, Books-a-million cashier, I-hop hostess, computer lab monitor, tutor, part-time hair dresser – and a HOST of other jobs that never make it to my resume.
And even with all of these jobs, I still felt like I wasn’t as qualified as other people interviewing for the same entry level job because I had no FORMAL, FULL TIME experience. If you feel like this, then this video is for you!
The only reason previous formal Full Time experience matters is because previous work experience builds competencies (or your ability to do something successfully). And your ability to reference previous experience demonstrates (or confirms) to the interviewer that you’ve got these competencies that will make you successful on the next job.
But if this is your first FORMAL job, I’m going to share with you 4 job interview tips for your first job that can help to demonstrate that you have the right competencies.

Let’s get right into these tips!
Tip #1: Reference Your Informal Work Experience
Unless you’ve just been sitting on the couch all day, everyday, I can guarantee you that you have some previous experience doing WORK (of some sort) – paid or unpaid.
Remember what I was telling you before about me? From freelancing, babysitting, computer lab, tutoring coaching, or even volunteering, I had a lot of odd jobs before my first formal, full time job opportunity.
What jobs have you had in the past, no matter HOW informal? What did you learn from those jobs? Or in other words, what competencies were you able to develop. Secret: the three informal jobs that taught you your TOP competencies should always be in your back pocket to reference (even if they are not listed on your resume).

Tip #2: Emphasize What You’ve Learned
This means to emphasize your education. Now, don’t make the mistake and be the person who emphasizes THAT they have all of these degrees. Instead, emphasize some highlights of what your education has taught you. How has it added value? Education can promote newer methods and ways of learning older systems and processes. What new things have you learned that could be valuable to this industry, company, department, or role? Share this with your employer.
Quick Pause! Was there ever a time during an interview you felt like you left out the most important highlight of your education? Tip #3: Always Highlight Your Leadership Ability
In all of the work that you do or have done, emphasize ways in which you took the helm. It doesn’t matter if it was on a sports team, project team, or while volunteering. Leadership can happen wherever you are. Demonstrating that you have the leadership competency will get you far.

Tip #4: Talk About Something That You’ve Built, Created, or Formed From Scratch
Do you know how many competencies it takes to create something where nothing was there beforehand? Have you ever organized a local chapter, or started a club or membership? Be sure to share this with your interviewer.

CareerSuccess Bonus Tip for UPs:
My niece mentioned to me that whenever she interviews, if she knows a white person is interviewing for the same role, she assumes that they will get the job. Replace “white person” with anything else, a man, a person with a degree, a person with an advanced degree, a person with more experience, etc…then this becomes a real feeling that a lot of people have. My advice to you is to watch your mindset. You must be confident in yourself and your own abilities. That confidence that you have (or lack thereof) can be the main reason you are selected or not selected for the role – regardless of whether this is your first interview or not.

In order to show your competencies, you must reference your informal work experience, emphasize what you’ve learned, highlight your leadership ability, and talk about something that you’ve built, created, or formed from scratch.
At the end of the day, you are worth fighting for!
