but what about me?

Episode #23

The Power of Mindset While Interviewing

In this episode Jenn has a career coaching session with Dwayne. During this session Dwayne expresses some concerns with being the "token" candidate and being unable to build a connection with disengaged or unprepared interviewers. Jenn coaches Dwayne through the power of mindset while interviewing and the steps he can take to steer a lackluster interviewer in the right direction.

Unfortunately, you are not going to always encounter great interviewers. As a matter of fact, there will be novice interviewers, ill-prepared interviewers, distracted interviewers, bias-filled interviewers, rushed interviews, and tough (for no reason) interviewers. Those are the ones you should plan for because there are plenty of them!

Show Notes:

How to interview well with a poor interviewer:

  1. If the interviewer is off topic on things that have nothing to do with the job then find a way to politely pivot the conversation back to your knowledge, skills, and experience.

  2. If the interviewer seems disengaged then pull the interviewer into the interview by asking questions that matter to him/her/them. For instance try asking the interviewer what his/her/their top two-three challenges are or ask what his/her/their top three properties are.

  3. If the interviewer is not asking you good questions then at the end of the interview say, "I want you to know three things about me." Make sure the things you mention are tied to the qualifications for the job.

A job search is a very vulnerable process. It can be triggering and elicit all types of emotions. It’s important to pay attention to self-talk during this process, especially when tensions get high.”

”Tokenism is real. But it is not worth loosing yourself in it. Rather than pour all your energy into trying to identify tokenism, take that energy and pour it into showing your value. Walk away from the interview knowing that your value is undeniable.
