Imagine feeling like a high performing recruiter. You are at the top of your game! You are getting positions filled with top talent, the time it takes you to fill a position is low, your hiring managers have full trust in your capabilities. Life is good.

Then, one day, your manager approaches you and says, we need to increase diversity. And now everything changes. You are on a whole new learning curve. Your new goal: diversity recruiting and inclusive hiring.

Do you know what it takes to become a successful recruiter specialized in diversity recruiting?

Check out our video from our Diversity Recruiter Central YouTube Channel where I explore the top 7 habits that I see in highly effective diversity recruiters.

Quick disclaimer: This is a video classic. It was created in 2018 and still holds true today. With that, in step #3, you will hear me ineffectively use the term “diverse.” This is an awesome teachable moment on how to effectively use this term. Remember, diversity isn’t because of me - it’s because of us!

Pressed for time? No worries. Below is a quick summary!

Habit #01 - Start, or continue, studying workforce diversity and workplace demographics. This will help you when determining what tactics are needed to recruit for diversity. It will allow you to know where the company is lacking and what can be improved.

Habit #02 - Form high value and highly effective external partnerships. This is where you practice your A.B.C.’s = Always Be Connected. Make an effort to form partnerships with affinity groups, employee resource groups, students, people graduating from your programs, and other groups or individuals that will benefit you and the company in many ways.

Habit #03 - Hone in on strengthening your cultural competence. This is a must for anyone trying to represent the diverse population or help them along their career journey. Take some time to learn about various cultures outside of your own. At the same time, don’t fully neglect your own culture. You can also always be learning things you were unaware of within your own cultural background.

Habit #04 - Engage with leaders and decision-makers. In order to be prepared, you need to create and practice your elevator pitch. Don’t be left struggling to get leaders to understand what it is you really do. Increase engagement by developing positive relationships and earning credibility. Your goal is to have people, leaders especially, listen to what you have to say.

Habit #05 - Find new systematic barriers to remove within the hiring process. To better prepare yourself, look at the past 3 years of data to determine if there are any patterns that were overlooked.

Habit #06- Always show proof of diversity and inclusion. You can do this by providing testimonials. Also, ask leadership (i.e., senior leaders) their thoughts on diversity in the workplace. This will allow you to see how much they understand diversity and if they think it’s important. Take time to educate them if needed.

Habit #07 - Monitor your own performance against metrics. Performance management is important because some recruiters don’t have any metrics to utilize. Without the proper metrics, you won’t know which measurements work best. Always remember that your role is to diversify the candidate pool. The hiring of candidates does now properly measure your performance.

There are skills that are needed to be a recruiter. Not much different than there being skills to be a highly effective person, like Steven Covey shares with us in his Book “Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People” So follow these recruiter tips and tricks because you too can have the qualities of a successful recruiter.
