When it comes to your ability to retain top talent, remember one thing...
Environment ALWAYS Wins.
I’m still surprised at the number of leaders I speak to who have not yet learned to correlate retention with the workplace environment.
"People leave managers, not companies."
- Marcus Buckingham
When you hear that people leave bad managers, it is often because the manager created, or enabled team members, to develop a bad (or toxic) workplace environment leaving affected employees to feel they could no longer be their best selves and do their best work.
According to Accenture’s Getting to Equal 2020 The Hidden Value of Culture Makers, there is a significant gap between what leaders (i.e., middle management and senior leadership) think is happening and what employees say is reality. 68% of leaders believe they are creating empowering and inclusive environments, while only 36% of employees agree.
Even if you feel that you have a great work environment, I want you to challenge yourself and ask one fundamental question. For whom? In other words, who does your work environment most benefit? Who do you have to be in order to experience a great work environment?
Question: Who does your work environment most benefit?
As a matter of fact, check out our newest SlideShare presentation, which includes nine (9) questions to ask yourself to evaluate your current workplace environment.

Being able to retain employees from historically underrepresented backgrounds is critical to having an effective diversity recruiting program. There is NO possible way to increase diversity at an organization if employees are resigning or being fired faster than they are hired—it’s like constantly trying to fill a cup with water that has a gaping hole at the bottom.
