Last week, I discussed how RFPs and procurement processes may stifle the growth of SMBs. I pointed out 6 hurdles that often trip up their growth and thus throttle the flourishing of supplier diversity. Well, I'm thrilled to say I am back. Here I am, as promised, back with a list of 10 possible solutions that can pave a smoother path for these businesses and enable you to achieve a holistic approach to increasing supplier diversity.

But before we dive into that, though, let me remind you that your thoughts and insights are a vital part of this discussion. They matter. So, when you're done reading, make sure you pop down to the comments section and share the unique challenges faced by SMBs, especially owned by people of color, and ways to solve them.

Here we go!

Potential Solutions to Supplier Diversity Roadblocks

Below are 10 actionable solutions to boost supplier diversity, specifically focusing on the many obstacles that small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) encounter along the way.

Solution #1: Tailor Contractual Agreements: Recognize that one size doesn’t fit all. Develop a “Small Business Standard Consulting Agreement” that caters specifically to the needs and capacities of SMBs. This tailored approach will allow smaller vendors to compete on a more level playing field.

Solution #2: Communicate Early and Clearly: Let would-be suppliers know upfront what is negotiable and what isn’t. This clarity saves time and eliminates the discouraging guesswork, setting the stage for a more fruitful negotiation.

Solution #3: Encourage Negotiation: Don’t lock down all terms and conditions. Foster a culture that invites negotiation and understanding that flexibility can be the key to unlocking valuable partnerships. Make it clear that negotiations are welcomed and encouraged.

Solution #4: Adjust Payment Terms: Consider adopting a tiered payment term system. For example, smaller businesses might be given shorter payment terms, such as net 30 days, while larger businesses stick with the traditional 90–120 day terms. This acknowledges the cash flow challenges often faced by smaller businesses and provides them with much-needed financial breathing space.

Solution #5: Review Insurance Requirements: Regularly review and update insurance requirements to ensure they are aligned with the specific nature of the work being done by different suppliers. This will eliminate irrelevant requirements, reducing financial strain and increasing accessibility for smaller businesses.

Solution #6: Respect Intellectual Property (IP): Establish a fair policy around the use of suppliers’ intellectual property. Instead of attempting to seize IP, provide clear guidelines for licensing arrangements that respect and reward innovation, fostering an environment of trust and mutual benefit. SMBs might need an IP strategist for this purpose.

Solution #7: Train Procurement Officers: Invest in diversity, equity, and inclusion training for procurement officers. This ensures the people directly involved in the process understand the importance of supplier diversity and are equipped to make decisions that align with these values.

Solution #8: Implement Mentorship Programs: Create mentorship programs that pair smaller, newer businesses with more established companies. This provides the smaller business with valuable insights, support, and networking opportunities, while the larger companies benefit from fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

Solution #9: Reconsider Financial History: Instead of focusing solely on a business’s financial history, evaluate their potential and the quality of their product or service. This could involve the development of new evaluation metrics that look beyond financials, giving newer, less established businesses a fair shot.

Solution #10: Set Supplier Diversity Goals: Just like having an initiative to increase diversity for recruitment, establish clear, measurable goals for supplier diversity. This will not only signal the company’s commitment to this cause but also offer a way to track and celebrate progress.

And that wraps up our exploration of potential solutions to boost supplier diversity. But don't think of this as the end-all-be-all, not at all. This is a conversation starter, a spark to ignite your unique, ingenious approaches. Feel free to take these solutions, give them a good shake, and remodel them in ways that best suit your organization and the SMBs you're aiming to support. Embracing diversity is an ongoing journey of discovery, adaptation, and communal growth. It's about taking a hard look at the landscape, recognizing the roadblocks for what they are, and consciously deciding to build bridges instead.
