I recently had the joy of collaborating with Audible.com to develop an Audible Original called The Essential Guide to the Perfect Interview. What I loved so much about creating this audiobook was that I got to build a bridge between job seekers and recruiters. For job seekers, this guide unpacks what it means to have a successful interview and the preparation it takes inside and outside—both on an emotional and tactical level. I get to share the unwritten rules of interview success that far too few individuals from historically marginalized groups ever get equitable access to. Check out the free course when you have an opportunity. As a matter of fact, here is a description:

With more than 20 years of recruiting experience, Jennifer Tardy has interviewed thousands of job seekers, and she brings this vital expertise to The Essential Guide to the Perfect Interview. In 12 lectures, Jenn will introduce you to her Level 10 Mindset Interviewing (LTMI) Model and take you through each of its steps. While the entire interview process can be highly subjective and contingent on some unpredictable factors, interview performance is crucial to landing the job or promotion you want. With her LTMI Model, Jenn will show you exactly what to do before, during, and after your interview so you can not only prove your knowledge, skills, and abilities, but also have an amazing interview performance.   Throughout this course, Jenn will teach you the unwritten rules of the interview process, show you how to acknowledge—and demonstrate—your own value, and illustrate the crucial importance of being present. With her interview model and these tools at your disposal, you will be ready to present yourself in the best light possible and set yourself up for success.

I’ve captured a snapshot of the opening to the audio course so that you can get a sense of what we are unpacking over the three hour experience. Let’s get started…

Ashley cried during the first five minutes of her interview.

Her tears were not tears of joy; they didn’t come because she was sharing a heartfelt story with the interview team. Ashley cried because she was nervous. Her voice trembled as she spoke, and her fingers fidgeted and interlocked. She apologized as soon as she realized things were getting out of hand, but it was too late.

The interview was over. And so was Ashley’s only chance for promotion. In just under 10 minutes, she went from feeling confident and positive to devastated and embarrassed. She was a junior recruiter and couldn’t move an inch from there. And it was so awkward for the interview panel; they never talked about it.

How do I know this? I was on the interview panel, so I was a first-hand witness to it all.

So when I got the opportunity to collaborate with Audible Originals to publish an audiobook on this very topic, I could not resist.

With more than 20 years of recruiting experience, I have interviewed thousands of job seekers, and there were 10 things that I noticed emerging as patterns that would lead to incredibly talented, qualified people not landing the job. Ashley was not the only one.

Why?

More than likely, at the organization where you are interviewing, there are what I call the unwritten rules to interview success. These are the actions that you need to take before, during and after the interview that no one tells you but should. That is why I developed the Level 10 Mindset Interview (LMTI) Model. Your guide to the unwritten rules for interview success.

Here is just a taste of the LMTI Model and what I share in The Essential Guide to the Perfect Interview audiobook.

LMTI #1: Know Your WHY.

This is a message I often share with our Inner Circle Legends during group coaching. When you join the program, one of the first activities we recommend is creating what we call a WHY Statement. This step comes before you interview and even before you begin your job search. It is one of those critical prerequisites that, if done correctly, anchors your entire job search process—including your interview.

LMTI #2: Know Your Value.

Here’s a second interview prep tool just as critical as knowing your why: do not enter an interview before you know your value. As simple as that. Now what is value? Value is simply the importance of something—that is, how much something is worth, or how useful something is. The faster you can show you’re valuable to a workplace, business unit, department, team, or simply a hiring manager, the more likely they’ll choose you as an asset.

LMTI #3: Know You Are Qualified.

This means you need to understand how bias impacts the ability of interviewers to perceive you as qualified, how to influence their perception, and why it is important to know for yourself (before you enter an interview) that you are truly qualified for the job. Regardless of historical displays and standards of success, regardless of the way in which you identify, and regardless of the decisions you have made along your career path – stop counting yourself out of great job opportunities.

Here are what people are saying about it:

This Will Help You Find Your Self-Esteem. I enjoy reading books on how to negotiate, whether it be for a promotion, a new job, or just something you want. Tardy puts the important interview in a good context. It’s mostly about a positive attitude and solid preparation. Perhaps more importantly, it’s also about recognizing your own value, which is something I think everyone could benefit from.” - Gilbert M. Stack

“Wonderfully helpful! On point, thought provoking and helpful. Loved it and off to the next best opportunity.” - Kindle Customer

“As a professional in HR with over 10 years of experience, I didn't expect much, but the book quickly proved me wrong within the first few pages. It's well-written and filled with numerous practical, hands-on examples. Bravo!” - Anonymous
